I have fought a good fight; I have finished the course; I have kept
the faith. II Timothy 4:7
A time to be born...James Butler Lewis, Jr. (affectionately called Big
Lew) was born to the late James Sr. and Hazel Lewis on December 31,
1937 in Greenville, South Carolina.
A time to plant... The vines of Jim’s life were rooted at St. Mark
United Methodist Church (Greenville, SC). He later found solace in
the pews of Arlington United Methodist Church (Baltimore, MD).
His faith was strong, and his spirit soared high like a Carolina blue
sky.
A time to learn...As a young boy, Jim was educated in the South
Carolina Public school system. Then he earned his stripes at Claflin
College (University) in Orangeburg, SC, where he proudly donned
his cap and gown to receive his Bachelor's Degree. Later, he marched
on to Coppin State University (Baltimore, MD), where he conquered
the academic battlefield and emerged victorious with a Master's
Degree.
A time to love... After graduating from Claflin University, like
so many men and women, he sought to fight for his country and
enlisted in the United States Army on July 20, 1961. While stationed
at Edgewood Arsenal (MD), he captured the heart of a young soldier
Jo Evelyn Westbrook. The fact that Jo Evelyn left Cincinnati Ohio
engaged did not stop Big Lew from pursuing her. Before long Jo
Evelyn was sending a “dear john letter” along with a record player
(given from her fiancé) back home to Cincinnati. On July 6, 1963
Jim and Jo Evelyn married and they built a loving home in Baltimore,
Maryland with their three children, Mark, Lynette and Jennifer.
This past July, Jim and Jo Evelyn celebrated their 60th wedding
anniversary!
A time to build...After Jim and his bride Jo Evelyn served their
country, they both were honorably discharged from the Army.
After his military days, Jim embarked on a career working for the
Maryland Division of Rehabilitation Services for Baltimore City
where he started as a vocational rehabilitation counselor and rose to
the rank of Division Director where he served until his retirement.
As the Division Director, he led his team with the finesse of a
conductor, orchestrating healing melodies and helping countless
individuals find their rhythm again.
Jim was a true southern gentleman with a heart as warm as a freshly
baked peach cobbler. He had a knack for making friends faster than
greased lightning. No stranger could resist his kind-hearted charm.
Whether he was cracking jokes or lending a helping hand, he always
knew how to brighten up a room. He loved traveling with Family and
Friends and he loved to entertain and barbeque. But let's not forget
Jim’s playful side, he was an avid Dallas Cowboys fan, cheering on his
team with unrivaled passion. He threw legendary Super Bowl parties
that left guests starstruck and hosted fight nights that packed a punch.
A time to die...Jim went home to be with the Lord on November 16,
2023, in Baltimore, Maryland leaving a trail of memories behind.
A time to mourn... Jim was preceded in death by his son Mark K.
Lewis and parents, James and Hazel Lewis. Jim leaves to cherish his
memory: his wife of 60 years Jo Evelyn, two daughters Dr. Lynette
Lewis of Woodlawn, MD and Jennifer Lewis of Baltimore County;
granddaughter Jordan Jackson who inherited Jim’s twinkle in the eye;
three sisters Joyce Lewis of Greenville, SC, Beverly Rowe of Greenville,
SC and Brenda Mcleod of New York, NY and a host of nieces,
nephews, and other family and friends.
